LOCAL CELEBRITY • FENCE CRITIC • FULL-TIME PROBLEM

Meet Phyllis.

She has food. She has water. She has friends. She has shelter. What she really wants is freedom and the attention of passing motorists.

At this point, nobody owns Phyllis. Somebody just funds her lifestyle.

THE ORIGIN STORY

The white calf on Lake Gulch Rd.

For the uninitiated, here is why a tiny white calf somehow became neighborhood folklore. Humanity has built spacecraft, decoded DNA, and still cannot convince Phyllis to remain inside a perfectly good fence.

01

Born mad. Stayed committed.

Phyllis is a bottle calf and a mini, and the working theory is that being mini has offended her personally since birth. She has spent the rest of her life making that everybody else's problem.

She escapes damn near anything you can put a calf in. Her fence is electric. It absolutely hurts to touch.

Not Phyllis. That little jolt is apparently just her morning cup of coffee.

02

Local fame did not humble her.

People now slow down driving past the pasture hoping for a glimpse of the little white menace. Five people in one day stopped to report her latest jailbreak.

03

The others are respectable citizens.

Her bovine friends have food, water, shelter, gratitude, and what appears to be a basic respect for property lines. Phyllis considers all of that a personal weakness.

04

What to do when Phyllis is loose

1.Honk.
2.Roll down the window.
3.Tell her she's embarrassing her family.
4.Know that Zoey has probably already chased her back seven times that day.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE

The suspect and her associates.

For anyone who assumed Phyllis was neighborhood folklore invented after a few drinks: regrettably, she is extremely real. So are the people and perfectly respectable cows forced to share a ZIP code with her.

One of these two pays the bills and understands property boundaries. The other considers electric fencing a light suggestion.

Three respectable bovine citizens and, positioned right in the middle like she planned the whole photo shoot, the neighborhood fugitive.

“Phyllis does what she wants. I just pay her bills.”
